Tuesday Night Kitchen was an eight-week experiment on the Splendid Table site intended to give you some ideas for simple weeknight meals. Each week we explored a food subject with tips, recipes, questions and answers with Foodtalk contributors, and periodic reports from food critic David Rosengarten. Find it all here.
October 15, 2002: Onions | Listen Lynne looks at the onion as a main-dish meal. David Rosengarten of The Rosengarten Report introduces us to the inexpensive and delicious tawny port, and we talk with forum regular Julia about the difference between red, white, and yellow onions.
October 8, 2002: Mediterranean Flavor Tricks | Listen Lynne brings us flavoring tricks from the Mediterranean: Simple uses for greens, olives, and roasted red pepper that will sex-up your weeknight meals. David Rosengarten of The Rosengarten Report joins us with his cheese picks from unexpected areas of the Mediterranean. And forum contributor Nancy gets the lowdown from Lynne on preserved lemons.
October 1, 2002: Lentils | Listen Lynne looks at one of the most versatile legumes out there—the lentil! These beans are a powerhouse of protein and easy to prepare, and they marry wonderfully in so many dishes. Our man with the golden palate, David Rosengarten of the Rosengarten Report, has discovered unusual beans imported from Italy, and Forum contributer Miss Firecracker wants to know about pink lentils.
September 24, 2002: Two Grains | Listen Lynne has a guide to two of the most versatile grains—whole wheat kernels and quinoa. Grains are the perfect thing to add to your diet when you're looking to cut back on meat products.
September 17, 2002: Grilled Vegetables | Listen Lynne takes a fresh look at grilled vegetables. She thinks they're a great mainstay of weeknight meals. Ever the practical cook, she offers a collection of good ideas for cooking once and eating twice or more. David Rosengarten of The Rosengarten Report has fallen in love with an olive oil from Spain.
September 10, 2002: Salad Dressings | Listen It's time to put down those store-bought bottles, because Lynne has a handful of ideas to get you on the road to salad nirvana—from the classic vinaigrette to a creamy ranch—there is nothing simpler to make or more satisfying. Our man with the opinionated palate, David Rosengarten of The Rosengarten Report, has discovered a very reasonable and very unusual vinegar from Italy.
September 3, 2002: Salads | Listen Lynne looks at the simple salad with fresh eyes. Think tender greens, the scent of freshly torn herbs lingering in your fingertips. Our man with the opinionated palate, David Rosengarten of The Rosengarten Report, has been tasting microgreens, and wants us to sample things like amaranth and upland cress. And finally Lynne has a conversation with forum regular cookrichard about using candied walnuts in salads.
August 27, 2002: Summer Pastas | Listen Lynne talks simple summer pastas-there is a reason Italians shudder at our cold pasta salads! Our opinionated palate David Rosengarten, of The Rosengarten Report, has suggestions for summer wines. Lynne takes questions from frequent Foodtalk contributor Donna Tracy, and we get a politically inspired recipe from Foodtalk contributor Miss Capri's Chef.
