Mourvedre
December 11, 2004

Wine maverick Joshua Wesson talks Mourvedre.
Listen to this feature (How to listen)

Mourvedre is the wine of the moment. Born in Spain from an obscure but delicious grape, this wine is thick, tannic and high in alcohol. It's meaty, rustic flavor makes it a real "muscle man" kind of wine. Called Monestrel in France, and Matero in California and Australia, Mourvedre tends to be on the lower end of the price scale. Here are some to try:

  • Casa Castillo: A Monestrel from Spain with the characteristic meaty, rich flavor. A wonderful bottle for under $10.

  • Ridge Mataro: From California's Pato Vineyard (the famous producer of Zinfandel) comes a knockout wine to pour when you're serving lamb. Purple lips and teeth are guaranteed. About $23.

  • Veritas: A blend from Australia priced around $25.
