Port-Style Wines—Not from Portugal
January 18, 2003
Wine wizard Joshua Wesson of Best Cellars likes these bargain-priced Port-style wines. Note that American Ports are a bit sweeter than Portuguese Ports, while those from South Africa are less sweet.
Buller Tawny Port: Toasty mocha flavors with spice highlight this Australian wine priced at about $12.
Ficklin: From one of the oldest producers in the United States, Ficklin is a tawny Port with nutty, smoky flavors. Sip it with chocolate-covered almonds. About $10 for a half bottle.
KWV Ruby Port: Less sweet than Portuguese style Ports, this one is wonderful with blue cheese and bittersweet chocolate.
