Muscadet comes from the western-most part of France's Loire River Valley where the cool, damp climate enables the grapes to maintain acidity. This is a refreshing wine - very dry and crisp/tart with flavors of apples, minerals, and occasionally grapefruit. Look for "sur lie" on the label. Particular to the Muscadet region, "sur lie" indicates the wine has been aged on its fermentation deposits (called lies) which add richness and texture to the wine.
You'll find Muscadet usually priced in the $7 to $12 range. A classic brand is Marquise de Goulaine. They do both a white label and a black label, each priced around $9 a bottle. Mary also likes Domaine les Hautes Noelles, Domaine la Haute Ferrie and Luc Choblet.
