Master of Wine Mary Ewing Mulligan recommends Vintage Character Ports. These are non-vintage, aged 4 to 6 years, are made to resemble vintage port and, therefore, are very consistent. The words "vintage character" are usually not on the label so look for the following:

Dow - called "Vintage Character Port"
Cockburn's "Special Reserve"
